Corporate Identity

The logo reveals a circular motive. The reason for this is that a circle, having no starting and finishing point, symbolises a continuous process. This is indicating the idea that education and training is a life-long process without distinguishable starting and finishing points.

However, a circle could also be regarded as a closed object that might create the idea of exclusion. To address this interpretation, a gap at the top of the circular design reveals the notion of a point of entry, conveying the idea of accessibility, i.e. access for all Free State citizens to education and training.

Two spheres can be identified in the logo. In the one the larger figure depicts the learning facilitator, while in the other the smaller figure represents the learner. The intertwined lines  between these two spheres indicate that although the spheres can be distinguished from each other, they cannot be separated. This conveys the idea that learning facilitator and learner are inter-dependant - the one cannot fulfill his/her destiny without the other.

The figures in the design reveal elements of the SA flag and therefore these figures transcend race, creed, religion, gender. etc. It must also be noted that both the learning facilitator and learner figures reveal a reaching out posture - thus, conveying the idea that the knowledge and skills passed on by the learning facilitator, are also transferred by the learner to the community in general.

The strong, but smooth flowing lines of the logo in general depict quality, efficiency and effectivity.

Earthy brownish and greenish colours are dominant in the design. The colour brown is usually associated with soil (growing medium/foundation) and green with a harvest (results/consequences). Therefore, the brown colour motive symbolises the role of basic values/principles and professional dedication in education and training, while the green reflects an outcomes-based education system and the overall development of Free State citizens. These colour elements are also intertwined and shows that the one directly affects the other. The blue is symbolic of sky and water and conveys the ideas of sustenance (sustainability) and endless possibilities.

The entire logo is placed on the strong base of the Free State Department of Education.
