CORPORATE IDENTITY
The Orange River Lily is central to the coat of arms. This hardy, beautiful
plant is found in
abundance on the swampy banks of the Orange River. It is able to survive long
dry winters,
and reappear each summer, stately as ever.
Green is one of the central colours. This symbolises the verdant, rolling grass
and grazing that
attracted, and was so important to early farmers. It is also the traditional
colour of growth,
and rebirth and more recently, renaissance, which is necessary for an entity
that endeavours
to progress.
The shield is capped by the all important koppies, which makes the province
scenically
interesting and distinctive.
The coronet is embellished with alternating wheat ears and maize cobs. Wheat may
be difficult
to grow, yet it thrives in the eastern region. Maize is staple to the economy,
and our province
is in the all important maize quadrangle.
The gold mined in our province is represented by the coronet of gold.
Diamonds appear in the band of the coronet. This beautiful, valuable and useful
stone may still
be found on the banks of the Orange River.
The coat of arms is supported by two cheetahs. These magnificent cats are
regarded as central
to the Free State psyche.
The foundation comprises the geological strata that are indeed the province’s
foundation.
The motto is apt, “Success through Unity”
